Yosemite Waterfalls

Posted by Ellie on Thursday May 12, 2011 Under Travels

In Yosemite Valley, we saw waterfalls everywhere. They were pouring down and you could hear them very clearly. They sprayed water everywhere. Sometimes it sounded like huge boulders coming crashing down. When you got some mist on you it felt like needles raining down. It hurt a little. My favorite waterfall was called horsetail. I think there were 100 waterfalls in that park. I had so much fun there.

Where did the name Yosemite come from?

  2. GrandDaddyAndy Says:

Also, why is it not pronounced Yo – Smight?

You’s-might want to pronounce it Yo-smight, and your meaning wouldn’t be too far off. The word Yosemite comes from the Miwok languages, and it means “those who kill.” The Miwok were neighboring tribes of the valley they called Awooni (gaping or large mouth), and they referred to the people living in the valley as Yosemite, because they were effectively a collection of feared renegades from various tribes throughout the region. The valley tribe actually called themselves the Ahwahnee, and the valley was named for the Ahwahnee by L. H. Bunnell, of the U.S. battalion who ultimately drove the tribe out of the valley. Apparently, Bunnell liked the sound of “Yosemite” better.

Hi Grandma! It was a long day at the bear walk and the waterfalls. It was cold after the bear walk. Love you, Grandma!
